Legal Constraints: Firearm Parts

A practical guide to regulated firearm parts and components.

Section 94 of the Firearms Control Act deals with possession of a slide, bolt or breech-block. The appropriate firearm licence or other lawful dealer/manufacturer/gunsmith/import/export/transporter authorisation may be required.

The Act includes the barrel, frame or receiver of qualifying firearms within the definition of a firearm, so these components can require the applicable firearm licensing and dealer process rather than ordinary accessory fulfilment.

Many ordinary accessories such as grips, stocks, sights and similar items are not the section 94 parts described above, although product-specific restrictions can still apply.

Read the current legislation at South African Government – Firearms Control Act.
